Scrappage extension
September 29, 2009
The car scrappage scheme is to be extended to cover an extra 100,000 cars and vans, the Government has announced.
The highly publicised Government-launched scrappage scheme has been been hailed a huge success, with nearly 250,000 older cars traded in against new ones… to date.
Buyers have been taking advantage of many of the most generous discounts ever offered as in addition to the Government’s contribution of £1,000, matched by a dealer discount of a further £1,000, some cars are attracting additional price cuts of up to £6,000 or more.
But the scheme is not without its critics.
David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint, said: “Motorpoint is disappointed to see that the Government has provided a further £100m towards the car scrappage scheme. While Motorpoint fully supports any efforts to create a thriving car industry in the UK, it believes the continual use of tax payers money to subsidise the car manufacturers and their dealer networks is not the answer and falls nothing short of electioneering.”
