Insurance is a premium issue
March 26, 2013
New safety proposals that could reduce insurance premiums for younger drivers are being considered by the Government.
Among the suggestions being considered is a minimum learning period before candidates are allowed to sit their driving test and also permitting learners to take lessons on motorways, possibly during poor weather conditions or after dark.
Increasing the existing probationary period from two to three years for a new driver’s licence to be revoked if they receive six or more penalty points is also being looked into along with making the driving test itself more rigorous.
Proposals were unveiled at a summit for the motor insurance industry, hosted by the Department for Transport and the paper, which will look at a range of options for improving the safety of newly-qualified drivers, will be published later in the spring.
