Ditch the traffic lights and watch the traffic flow in city centres – that’s the clear message from nearly two thirds of motorists according to a survey by Motorpoint.
The news comes in the wake of a trial in Bristol city centre which found removing lights can work. The council switched them off in Broadmead and Broad Quay for two weeks without incident. But the council decided against making the trial permanently because of the cost of physically changing the two sites.
David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint, said: “Traffic congestion, particularly in urban areas, has become progressively worse in recent years, to the point where traffic almost comes to a standstill in some cities during the rush hour. Whilst more studies would need to be carried out, there is clearly an argument for removing traffic lights in certain places to keep cars flowing more freely.”
